It’s time to cut through the noise and ditch all the BS business advice flooding your feeds.

Let’s get real!

You can’t convince a client to be brave if you’re not brave yourself. It’s like trying to sell someone on a wild adventure when you’ve never left your own backyard. Clients don’t need convincing—they need to see it in your work. They need to feel it. And if you’re playing it safe, they’ll play it even safer.

I used to think I could “upsell” clients into taking risks, push them to be bolder, more daring. But here’s the kicker: I wasn’t pushing myself. I was waiting for permission. Waiting for them to lead when the leadership had to come from me.

Playing It Safe is Keeping You Stuck

There was a time when I was stuck doing the same, uninspired projects for clients who never wanted to break the mold. And I was frustrated—thinking the problem was with them. Nah. The problem was with me.

‍
I was playing it safe. I wasn’t pushing boundaries in my own work. I wasn’t taking risks. So why would my clients? I wasn’t showing them what bold, brave, innovative looked like. I was stuck in the safe zone, and my clients followed me there.

That was the wake-up call. If I wanted to work with clients who wanted to do great, daring things, I had to show them I was already living that life. No more waiting for permission.

Safe Work Attracts Safe Clients

Let’s cut to the chase—if you’re attracting clients who always want to take the easy route, it’s because your work reflects just that. Safe. Comfortable. Predictable.

Here’s where most creatives go wrong:

If you want bold clients with big budgets, you have to lead by example. Don’t wait for a client to trust you—build that trust by showing what you’re capable of through your work.

Here’s How You Attract the Right Clients

Step 1: Invest in Your Own Work

If you’re not pushing your own boundaries, don’t expect clients to. You’ve got to lead by example. Start creating the kind of work that makes people stop and say, “Damn, that’s different.” When you invest in yourself, clients see it—and they’ll invest too.

When I stopped waiting for clients to take the leap and started doing bold work on my own terms—personal projects, collaborations, passion work—that’s when the right clients started showing up. The ones who wanted creativity, not conformity.

Step 2: Curate Your Portfolio with Brave Work

Your portfolio is your calling card, not a scrapbook. Show only the work that reflects where you want to go, not where you’ve been. Clients will see that you’re not afraid to take risks, and they’ll want in on that energy.

If your portfolio is safe, expect safe clients. But if it shows bold, innovative, different? That’s the magnet.

Step 3: Make Boldness the Standard

Don’t save your bold ideas for the “right” project—every project should push boundaries. Most people think they need to ease into boldness. They don’t. Boldness should be your default. When clients see that, they’ll know you’re a leader. And leaders attract leaders.

The Clients You Want Are Looking for Creatives Who Lead

The big clients, the ones with the daring ideas and the big budgets—they’re out there. But they’re looking for creatives who aren’t afraid to lead. Creatives who take risks, who innovate, who push the envelope.

When your work shows that you’re one of them, you don’t have to convince anyone to be brave. They’ll come to you, ready to invest in what you’re doing.

Stop playing it safe. Invest in your own work, lead with boldness, and the right clients will follow.
