Let’s cut the crap—does money really matter? Sure, you need to keep the lights on, but if that’s what’s driving your creative business, you’re missing the point entirely.
‍
The world is obsessed with money—how much you’re making, saving, spending. And you know what? It’s all noise. It’s the static that drowns out what really matters: your creativity, your vision, your impact.
‍
These so-called business gurus are selling you the same tired bullshit: focus on efficiency, streamline your processes, maximize ROI. They want you to think that turning your creativity into a cash cow is the ultimate goal. Well, fuck that.
‍
Here’s the truth: money is just noise. It’s a distraction from what you’re really here to do—create, inspire, and make a f*ing difference in peoples lifes.

The Three Games of a Creative Business

Let’s break it down. There are three distinct games you can play as a creative business owner:

1. The Hustle Game

At this level, you’re stuck selling your skills project by project, like a street vendor hustling wares. It’s exhausting and unstable. Most creatives play that game. It's familiar, it's known, it feels real. But is it?

2. The Money Game

Here, you’re focused on efficiency and ROI. It’s profitable but stifling, trapping you in safe, predictable work. This is how guru's tell you to build a business. Yet they are missing the point, too. The world needs a transformation, not efficiency.

3. The Innovation Game

This is where real transformation happens. It’s about disrupting markets and creating lasting impact. When you’re in this game, you’re not just fulfilling orders; you’re setting the rules. This is what I call creative freedom. Yet it won't come without taking some risks.

Why the Money Game Is Killing Your Creativity

Staying stuck in the Money Game is the fastest way to kill your creativity:

How to Break Free and Start Playing the Innovation Game

If you’re serious about making shit that matters, here’s how to break out of the Money Game and start playing the Innovation Game:

Step 1: Ditch the Money Obsession

Recognize that money is just noise. Focus on what really drives you—your creativity, your vision, your voice.

Studio Flux did this by choosing projects that reignited their passion rather than just filling their bank account. They were stuck churning out generic explainer videos but chose to work with a local startup they believed in, focusing on storytelling-driven content. It wasn’t immediately profitable, but it led to bigger opportunities with clients who valued their innovative approach.

Step 2: Stop Selling, Start Shaping

Move beyond selling skills or efficiency. Start thinking about how you can shape your clients, their companies, and the markets they’re in.

BrandCore shifted from cranking out logo packages to crafting entire brand experiences. For a boutique hotel chain, they didn’t just design a logo—they shaped every detail of the guest experience, transforming how clients engaged with their customers and positioning themselves as strategic partners.

Step 3: Embrace the Chaos

To get to the top, you need to embrace the chaos. Stop trying to control everything and let your creativity take the lead. Yes, it’s messy. Yes, it’s risky. But that’s where the magic happens.

Nova Graphics took a leap into the unknown with a passion project reimagining the visual identity of forgotten cultural landmarks. This risky move paid off by establishing them as innovators in their field, leading to significant new opportunities.

In Conclusion:

Money Is the Trap—Make Shit That Matters

So, does money really matter? Sure, it does—but here’s the thing: money is the trap. It lures you into playing it safe, keeping you comfortable while slowly draining the life out of your creativity. The real value of your work isn’t in the profits you make—it’s in the impact you have, the people you inspire, and the change you create.
‍
When you stop letting money be the focus and start creating from a place of meaning and purpose, that’s when your creative business truly thrives. Break free from the trap, stop chasing money, and start chasing meaning. Because at the end of the day, it’s not the cash in your pocket that defines you—it’s the legacy you leave behind.
