The Budget Ceiling

We're told there are two paths. Stay freelance and stay stressed. Or grow into an agency with staff, meetings, and thinner margins than you had alone. There's a third path. The small studio — one to ten people, running a premium process.What stops most people is a chain. You're known as a maker. So you keep your opinions to yourself. Nobody knows what you stand for. So nobody hands you the strategy. So you're never in the room when the money gets decided. So the ceiling stays. Change the first link and the rest follows. You're known as a guide. So you say what you think. People know what you're for. They bring you in to decide, not to deliver. You're in the room before the budget exists. And the budget moves. That's the whole thing. It's just hard to see, because you can't see your own position from the inside.

Twelve weeks. Four hours a week. Here's the rhythm.

We start October 13 with a kickoff call.
‍We all take two weeks off at Christmas. We finish January 29. A good start to your new year.

Week 1 — Kickoff call.
We meet, work out where everyone is, and start the first asset.

‍Every Friday — The challenge drops.
One asset, one week. Due Sunday in the group.

‍Every Thursday — Live call.
‍You bring your questions. About the challenge. About a client. About pricing. About whatever is stuck. I answer them. No question is too small.

‍In between — Office hours in the group chat.
‍Ask when you're stuck, not when the calendar says so. I answer there too.

‍Monthly — A guest from my network.

THE ROOM

Thirty people. Not three. Not three hundred. Three is a coaching call. Three hundred is a course with a chat box. Thirty is the number where someone asks you a question you hadn't thought of. Someone close enough to your situation that it matters. And there are still enough of you that the questions cover ground you'd never find alone. Every one of them has been doing this for years. I've been the fast-growth, thirty-five-people-on-payroll studio founder myself.

Today I keep it lean. I work with independent creative firms from Berlin to Barcelona and Amsterdam to Austin, and I teach the rest of it through a twelve-week programme called the Boutique Studio Accelerator.

I've done some cool stuff. I spent years travelling the world as a freelance motion designer, working out of studios in Europe, Australia and the US. I built a motion studio in 2012 and we rebranded more than sixty TV stations. The idents, the titles, the whole on-air look of channels people watched every night without ever wondering who made them. Picked up around twenty awards along the way.

Then I sold it, and advised a two-person studio that turned a five-figure execution brief into a seven-figure project for RedBull.tv, with the mandate to lead it (two people won against agencies fifty times their size). I've advised three hundred firms since, several went from six to seven figure businesses. One of which is now an eight-figure business. And I co-founded Paradiso Institute, which is where a lot of this thinking gets argued about properly.

I've been in this industry twenty-five years, and advising for twelve of them. I do my best work with independent studios and practices who are good, know they're good, and are tired of being treated like a pair of hands. I get excited watching students how their life changes in real time.
